Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven..........Matthew 6 v19-20

In the bible there is a fascinating story that was told by Jesus about a very successful business man (Luke 12: 16 – 21).

He was a farmer and one year had a particularly good harvest. So much so that he decided to knock his barns down and build bigger barns to store it all in. A wise decision.

But then came his error. He said to himself, “you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."

"But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

What was wrong with what he thought?

Firstly it showed that his ultimate happiness was based on the things that do not last.

Secondly he assumed that he would be the one who got to enjoy it all.

Don’t you think that there is a futility about what we often look to for happiness? None of it lasts and we can’t take it with us when we die.

The point that God is making is this; don’t base your ultimate happiness on how much you earn or what you own.

Because one day those things one way or another will be taken away, your car or motorbike might be stolen or crashed into. Your company might go bust and you’re going to leave everything behind anyway.

What is infinitely better is to base your ultimate happiness on things that never lose their value and will never be taken away.

Like knowing God and His forgiveness and having that hope of heaven.
