Who's who

Elders

John Cowley      Pastor

I am married to Esther and have 3 lovely daughters. I wasn’t from a religious family but became a Christian in my teens. After 7 years in local government human resources I was called to work for the church at Forest Fold and have had the privilege of serving in it since 1998. In 2008 the church asked me to be pastor, so with the other elders I try to lead the church and teach from the Bible at a lot of the services. I still attempt to play 5 aside football with those younger than me – but the reflexes are slowing up! Of the many great verses in the Bible, my favourite is ‘but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us’ – Rom 5 v8.

Stephen Sharpe      Elder

Coming to Forest Fold as a young boy was not my idea of the most enjoyable way to spend Sundays but in my early 20's God showed me that I was a sinner and that I needed to be saved.  Over 50 years later the text " When I see the blood I will pass over you " is still as precious to me as it was when I was converted. My work as an Elder is to support John in his pastoral duties. After retiring as a Chartered Surveyor I have become involved with a charity distributing Christian books and Bibles in Africa and beyond. It is a delight to live in an area with such beautiful countryside and I and my wife take great pleasure in exploring Ashdown Forest.

Mark Philpott    Elder and Youth Worker

Hi, I’m Mark and I’m a Youth Worker here at Forest Fold. I’m involved in Young Life, Action and YP’s so if you come along to any of those you’ll probably see me there. I also lead Bible Studies during the week to help young people understand more about who Jesus really is and why he’s so important to us today. When I’ve got some spare time I particularly love mountain biking, playing tennis or going for a round of golf, but I enjoy playing any kind of sport, even if I’m not very good at it.

John Hitchcock  Elder

John’s main responsibilities within the church are leading the afternoon Sunday school and supporting the morning Sunday school. He is also involved with the practical aspects of church life. John is married to Marilyn, and they have 4 children... and far too many chickens! He is a self employed joiner and enjoys his work in designing and creating.

Inspirational verse: the Son of man came not to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.   Matt 20 v28
